some pictures of us and what we like to do!

Our Letter

Camping, bedtime stories, finger painting and mud pies. Forts made from bed sheets and pillows, baking cookies, flying kites and trips to the zoo. Hockey games, parades, sledding and snowball fights. These are wonderful memories that we have from our childhoods, and we would love to share these experiences with a child! Thank you so much for reading our letter, for letting us share our life and memories with you as you make this important decision. We admire your courage and hope we can provide the loving home that you are searching for.
We met 15 years ago at obedience class with our two loving, yet naughty, dogs. Who knew that was the beginning of our lives together! We have been learning from each other ever since. After getting married, we thought that starting a family was the next natural step for us. We struggled with infertility for a few years before deciding that building our family through open adoption was the path for us. Our journey to this decision has taken some twists and turns, but we made it – we are here! Thanks for reading our story!

Kerry

I was born in Chicago and raised in the suburbs. I have a younger brother (who has given me a beautiful niece) and a very large extended family. My mom stayed home to raise us while my father worked for the military in the Army Reserves. Thankfully, we never had to move anywhere, Dad maintained a civil servant position - he was never called to active duty. We spent our summers going to museums, the zoo, the pool, visiting my uncle in Wisconsin at his summer home on Powers Lake – anything we could do as a family. We had a very large yard, so much time was spent outside gardening (both flower and vegetable), climbing trees and playing on our swing set or in the sand box. Unfortunately, my father passed away 14 years ago from cancer, but Mom is still an active part of our lives. I returned to college in 2003 and graduated in 2007 with my Associates Degree in Applied Technology and my Radiography license, so now I take x-rays in an orthopedic office for a living and love it! Working in healthcare has always been a passion of mine, and I am able to help with the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of medical problems as an x-ray technologist. When not working, I love camping, working out, gardening, cooking, crocheting and spending time with friends and family. I am addicted to the written word and am a self-proclaimed book worm! Give me a great book and a steaming cup of hot chocolate and I am one happy woman!

Tim

I was born and raised in Palatine, IL and enjoyed living in what was the country at the time. We had lots of kids in the neighborhood to play sports with and places along Salt Creek where we could build forts and play. I became an apprentice pipe fitter and attended 4 years of school to become a journeyman pipe fitter, which is what I still do today. I have many interests and hobbies, music being an important one. I play guitar and bagpipes and am the pipe sergeant for the Chicago Highlanders Pipe Band. We perform at a lot of parades and different functions throughout the year. Guitar has been a passion of mine since I was small, and I have been in a band since 1990 playing Celtic folk music. I have been a Living History Interpreter for 30 years, and that is my favorite hobby. My entire family does this, so we spend a lot of the summer together camping and re-enacting the Revolutionary War. I enjoy traveling and meeting new people. Bagpiping has led to several new friends and places to visit throughout the world. I enjoy the life I lead and like to share what I have learned with others, while picking up things they have to share. I love to listen to stories and share them with others. I am a dog guy. Running through the woods with my dogs is the best, and just having them around always brings happiness to me. My dog Maggie taught me what unconditional love was about, and I in turn can now give that to another person.

Our Life Together

While we support each other in our differences, we love spending time together. Tim introduced Kerry to camping, re-enacting and a good hockey game! We like to travel to new places and try new things-this past summer we took up kayaking and last winter we bought snow shoes. We love to fly kites and go to the movies together, and yet respect each other’s hobbies or activities that we do on our own. We have a great group of core friends who have been with us over the years, through thick and thin, and are as close to us as our immediate family. Every year on Christmas Eve, we fill our house with our parents, siblings and our best friends and their children-not to mention the dogs! We call it Hess Christmas Chaos, and we love every minute of it! Every Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Easter we go to a family member’s home for dinner and to spend time. Birthdays, anniversaries -every major event is celebrated by some type of family gathering - from a large party to a simple family dinner.

We have 2 loving and adorable dogs-Malcolm (9) and Jack (5). Malcolm was adopted from a shelter when he was 11 weeks old and is a Border Collie mix. We encountered Jack when he was about 3 months old on an Amish farm in New York while on vacation - he kept escaping from the porch he was penned in, and we ended up buying a puppy from the farmer instead of the eggs we had originally came for! Jack is also a Border Collie mix and is very happy to be living inside a house instead of a horse barn. Both our boys are very affectionate and are great with children-a trait we are very fortunate to have since we don’t have children in the house often.

Our family and friends have all shown us fantastic support in our decision to adopt. Through family members and friends who have either adopted or chosen an adoption plan for their child, we have seen the overall positive impact of an open adoption for the entire family. We believe that through an open adoption we can give our child the best possible future.

Thank you again for reading our story. Hopefully we have given you some insight into who we are and that you will consider us as a forever family for your child.
